Another trait of this unique performance tradition is its strong intercultural character, already in place at the beginning of the 19th century. I maintain that there is an integral connection between popular approaches to staging Aristophanes and the legacy of democratic enlightenment values. My project explores Lysistrata’s extraordinary performance history, unearthing a staging tradition of Aristophanes as popular theater, stretching continuously over two centuries and linking 1789 revolutionary politics in France to global activism today. ![]() ![]() Terrified that the gruffalo might eat it, each animal flees. This Visitation dates from the very late 12th century, when Catalan Romanesque art, which at first had been influenced by the Byzantine-Lombard style, underwent an original development, ending (as we see here) in the inspired adoption of the “clear line.” This graphic language-which became necessary as early as the 11th century for the production of leaded stained-glass windows-would be adopted and theoretically defended in the mid-20th century by the ingenious Belgian cartoonist Hergé, the creator of Tintin, in response to the technical constraints imposed at the time by the process of printing comic strips in color. ![]() ![]() ![]() I also skipped ahead to check the ending and have to say that it was less a cliffhanger and more like a guillotine dropping between one sentence and the next, that's how abrupt it was.
